Our original plan was to stay at Mittry Lake outside of Yuma for a couple more days \u2026 but then we learned that there was to be a kids \u201cfishing derby\u201d over the weekend, starting Saturday at 6:00 AM.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u201d were there for the peace and quiet, and there wouldn\u2019t be much of that when the kids arrived!<\/p>\n

We drove to Congress (AZ) having passed Nothing (AZ) and ending up beyond Hope (AZ).\u00a0 We found a delightful site on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land with mountain views and Prickly Pears in bloom.\u00a0 All was well \u2026 until we heard the shooting!\u00a0 Actually, it was fine \u2013 on the other side of the ridge was an informal target range and someone was exercising his rifle.<\/p>\n

As we left Congress we encountered a sign saying rigs over 40\u2019 prohibited!\u00a0 Since we are about 55\u2019 combined truck and trailer, we decided a different route was required.\u00a0 While it was a little more \u201cround about\u201d we finally pulled through Cottonwood and headed to the Red Rocks area.<\/p>\n

I had done some research on boondocking spots near Palatki, so we found a spot fairly quickly \u2013 after driving about 3 miles on a rock & dirt & gravel \u201croad\u201d.\u00a0 But the site was worth it!\u00a0 And we would be only three miles from our new destination \u2013 Palatki Heritage Site!<\/p>\n

We have now been settled in at Palatki for a week.\u00a0 We met Doug & Brenda \u2013 our outgoing neighbors; and Tom and Jan, our new neighbors \u2013 both have made us feel welcome and helped us to settle in with our duties at Palatki.\u00a0 We still have more to learn to feel \u201ccompetent\u201d in giving some of the tours, but we\u2019re making progress \u2013 and the site is amazing.<\/p>\n
