The drive from Banff to Jasper along the Icefields Parkway was a delightful journey in beautiful mountain scenery.\u00a0 It was gray and sprinkling rain much of the day.\u00a0 Several of these, Judith took through the windshield as we drove!\u00a0 — You can click on any of the pictures to open in a new tab, larger size.<\/p>\n

We stayed at the David Thompson Resort in Cline River, AB.\u00a0 (Really they are synonymous – the campground is the entire town of Cline River!)\u00a0 As some may remember, we spent a summer at Grand Portage National Monument, immersed in the story of the fur trade.\u00a0 David Thompson was a fur trader, explorer, and map maker — his maps of western Canada were the standard until well into the 1900’s.\u00a0 The nearest real town to our campground was Rocky Mountain House, AB, which had started as a fur trading post for the NorthWest Co. and was only 85 miles away!\u00a0 So we drove over to pick up a few supplies, and to visit the park dedicated to the fur trading site.\u00a0 The site did not begin to compare to Grand Portage, but was interesting — but the drive was more interesting with a huge glacial reservoir on the Saskatchewan River and a small herd of mountain goats along the road.<\/p>\n

The next day was again mixed rain and sun, but we made\u00a0the drive to the Jasper Icefields and the\u00a0Athabasca Glacier.<\/p>\n

The drive was beautiful:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And the Glacier was amazing!<\/p>\n

In 1942 the Athabasca Glacier extended to this point. That’s how much the glacier has melted!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In the 1800’s the glacier filled this entire area!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The drive home was beautiful as well:<\/span>\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
