7\/29 — Halifax, N.S. – – We used Halifax as a jumping-off point for several excursions. It is a large city with city traffic, and Uber!<\/p>\n

We started our day with a stop at the Titanic Cemetery. Halifax was the nearest large port to the place where the Titanic had sunk. A large number of the survivors and the dead were therefore brought to Halifax. While many of the dead were transported to be buried with families, etc., 150 are buried in Halifax … 121 at the Fairlawn Cemetery. Some of those were never identified.<\/p>\n

Our next stop was Lunenburg, a quaint fishing village turned tourist attraction. The multi-colored houses, the harbor filled with sailboats, the horse-drawn carriage all add to the appeal of the place. It is also the home of the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, a place given to the history of fishing and sailing. There was a volunteer refitting a model sailboat.<\/p>\n

On our way back to Halifax, we stopped at the Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse which may be the most photographed lighthouse in all of Canada.<\/p>\n

7\/30 — Halifax – The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is a very large museum with shared emphases on the Age of Sail, the Titanic, and the Halifax Explosion. Being from the States, I had not heard about the Halifax Explosion, but it was believed to be the largest man-made explosion before Hiroshima. Two ships collided in the narrowest part of the Halifax harbor, one of those was completely filled with explosives. It wiped out a huge section of the town as well as the waterfront with nearly 2,000 people killed.<\/p>\n

7\/31 — The Halifax Botanical Garden is a free, park-like setting with interesting plantings and gorgeous flowers. \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
