Our friends, Roy & Theresa, had arranged for a time share in the Berkshires (Lee, MA). While we had anticipated that this would be “down time”, it really didn’t turn out that way. We found that there were a multitude of activities available.
Of course, Tanglewood Music Center, is nearby … however the tickets were very expensive, as were tickets to the dance performances at Jacobs Pillow. There were many other things to do. We attended a talk on the grounds of “The Mount” (home of Edith Wharton). While we did not tour the home, it was beautiful from the outside.
There were several other museums and homes which we considered, but some were only open on the weekend, etc. Roy & Theresa had more energy than we did, so they did some things that we skipped.
Theresa found a delightful play being performed by the Berkshire Theatre Group at the The Colonial Theatre, “The Legend of Georgia McBride”. It was an absolute hoot! The basic premise is that an Elvis impersonator is working in a run down bar. They are only drawing in 6 customers on a good night. The owner decides to convert the bar into a Drag Queen show and the Elvis impersonator is left with the choice to join the new show or be unemployed. His wife is pregnant, so the job is important, and he agrees to stay. The rest of the show is the complications that result. The audience was 99.9% senior citizens (they all LOOKED older than US!) and they gave the cast a standing ovation. [The Legend of Georgia McBride]
We thoroughly enjoyed the Norman Rockwell Museum! There were stories of his development as an illustrator (he refused to call himself an artist) and of course lots and lots of his drawings. The theme of the exhibition was “From Revolution to Rockwell” and it included other artists as well as just his own. There were hundreds more of his and other pictures worthy of highlighting including every one of his Saturday Evening Post Cover illustrations, but these are a few of our favorites.
Rockwell was a great supporter of FDR, he was especially moved by Roosevelt’s speech outlining the Four Freedoms.
We spent several hours at the Rockwell Museum and enjoyed every minute!
But perhaps the most important activity while we were there was the Board Games! Mark actually won all three games we played! (Terraforming Mars & Wingspan)
It was the perfect ending to a wonderful trip.
